Dr. Shafi completed his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rajshahi Engineering College in 1978, laying the foundation for his illustrious career. He then pursued his Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka, graduating in 1985. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India, in 1992.

Dr. Shafi’s career spans over four decades, marked by his unwavering dedication to academia and service to his institution, Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET). He began his journey as a Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at RUET in March 1982 and steadily progressed through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and teaching prowess.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Shafi held various administrative positions, including Department Head of Civil Engineering and Urban & Regional Planning, Dean of Civil Engineering, and Director of Planning and Development. His expertise in engineering management led to his appointments as Chief Engineer and Provost of several halls at RUET, where he played a pivotal role in fostering a conducive learning environment for students.

As a Professor in Civil Engineering since June 2000, Dr. Shafi has been instrumental in shaping the academic landscape through his comprehensive teaching methodologies and innovative research endeavors. His areas of expertise include Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Engineering, Hydrology, Irrigation & Flood Engineering, among others. Dr. Shafi’s research focuses on addressing critical hydrological issues such as drought, flood, and groundwater resources management, reflecting his commitment to finding sustainable solutions to pressing environmental challenges.
